The old wash house was built and put into service in 1874. It is formed by a vast U-shaped courtyard, open to the south and framing a rectangular basin of approximately 9m by 15m. The northern part has 5 spans; the side parts, east and west, each three spans. The tile cover overhangs a canopy over the basin, protecting the washers. The western part, partly demolished to widen the road, has only 3 spans.

This wash house, which was used until the 70s, then dethroned by washing machines, could accommodate around twenty "washers" (2 per bay). They were often "professionals" in the laundry, who went from house to house to wash the clothes, a hard job, especially in winter.

The basin is fed by the Le Lignageau stream. The main source, known as the Chaplaincy, would be endowed with medicinal properties. This source never dries up, even in the greatest droughts, as in 1976. This explains the location of the washhouse.
