Located in La Roche-sur-Yon, in the heart of the Vendée region , Le Potager Extraordinaire (The Extraordinary Vegetable Garden) lives up to its name. This unique place invites visitors on a true botanical and vegetable garden journey, where curiosity, wonder, and knowledge sharing come together for a playful and sensory exploration of the plant world.
Conceived as a living space, this 7-hectare site combines themed gardens, collections of unusual plants, participatory experiences, and moments of conviviality. Here, you don't just come to observe, but to feel, taste, experiment, and learn … all while having fun!
Founded in 1995, the Extraordinary Vegetable Garden was born out of a project to conserve cucurbits and promote the Pays des Achards. From the outset, it has attracted gardening and living enthusiasts thanks to its educational vocation and unique plant collection.
In 2014, when it was threatened with closure, it was taken over by the Estille Group , a committed player in the social and solidarity economy. A new dynamic was set in motion: the number of visitors doubled , and the vegetable garden took on a new dimension by combining social integration, seed conservation, environmental education and community engagement.
Since 2019, it has been located at the Beautour site in La Roche-sur-Yon, with a completely redesigned scenographic journey, co-created with Thierry Rétif (creator for Puy du Fou and Parc Astérix). The result: a magical immersion for all ages!
The Extraordinary Vegetable Garden is a place for creating shared memories : with family, friends, classmates, or colleagues. There you'll discover:
- Un bizarretum, where the most astonishing plants challenge our benchmarks,
- A vegetable library, rich in knowledge and rare seeds,
- Un experimental vegetable garden and market gardening area to learn by putting hands in the soil,
- A mini farm, an exotic garden, an tunnel of giant tomatoes and squash,
- The workshops, guided tours and activities all season.
Beyond its playful nature, the Extraordinary Vegetable Garden is a committed player for the future . By safeguarding forgotten varieties, promoting rare food plants, and passing on simple techniques, it helps raise public awareness of current environmental issues.
Here, you learn to harvest your own seeds , start your own small vegetable garden , and see the living world around you in a new light. Each visit is an invitation to marvel, to ask questions… and to leave with a renewed desire to garden differently.
