La Roche-sur-Yon, a town in the heart of Vendée, still bears the imprint of its illustrious founder: Napoleon I.
In just a few decades, what was once a modest town became a new city, designed and shaped by imperial will. Its grid plan, its characteristic architecture and its institutional heritage make it a unique example of Napoleonic urban planning in France.

A bold imperial projectx
On May 25, 1804, Napoleon I decided to move the prefecture of Vendée to La Roche-sur-Yon, a strategic choice that allowed for better administration of the department. But the city, then underdeveloped, had to be completely rebuilt. Under the leadership of engineers Cormier and Valot, it adopted a pentagon-shaped plan with a checkerboard organization, inspired by the ideals of rationality and order dear to the Emperor. This urban layout, still visible today, gives it a strong identity and a unique architectural heritage.
