Building with the appearance of an ancient temple which conceals a magnificent Italian theater.

The Théâtre à l'Italienne in La Roche-sur-Yon is an iconic venue for live performance, which continues to host a varied cultural program, supported by the city, the Grand R national scene and local associations.

In January 1805, Emperor Napoleon approved a plan to build a "comedy" in the heart of the city, to be financed by the municipality. However, due to a lack of funds, the theater was not inaugurated until 1845, on the site of the former barracks of the First Empire. It replaced a temporary performance hall that had been installed in the market halls since 1811.

Like other neoclassical buildings in Yonne, the theatre is distinguished by its imposing façade, adorned with a peristyle with columns and pilasters, supporting an entablature and a triangular pediment.

Inside, its Italianate wooden hall is richly decorated. In 1888, the balconies were adorned with comedy masks, flower garlands, and musical instruments, while the coffered ceiling alternates between depictions of the Muses and bouquets of flowers, creating a unique atmosphere.

Le Théâtre à l'Italienne demeure un lieu incontournable pour les passionnés de culture et de patrimoine.

L'équipe d'accueil du théâtre vous accompagne pour des visites curieuses et gratuites en dehors des évènements et des répétitions.
