The mimosa — Acacia dealbata, a species native to Australia and introduced to Europe at the end of the 18th century — brightens winter with its vibrant yellow flowers. Its early blooms color the landscape and fill the air with a delicate fragrance, offering a burst of sunshine in the middle of the cold season, a foretaste of spring.
Mimosa is found around the Mediterranean, where the painter René Rousseau-Decelle traveled in the 1930s, as well as on the Atlantic coast. It has become the emblematic flower of the island of Noirmoutier, nicknamed the island of mimosas.
